HeroForge Review- part 1

Before Christmas I ordered a HeroForge mini.  After what felt like forever and hearing that there would be further delays, I was surprised to actually have received it in the time frame promised (1 month).  It was quite pricey at $30 for the “paintable” quality, but I thought I would give it a shot to see if I could recommend it to customers.  They have a really cool customization interface, but the options are disappointingly limited.  I’m sure they will add more when they get a chance, since I’m sure its not easy to program the art considering all the posing options and such.  I came up with the following for an Arcane Bloodrager from Ustalav that I was going to use for Carrion Crown until my Bard was magically resurrected.  Her name is Grete.

Grete

Look at how bad-ass she looks.  You can manipulate their mouths and eyes a lot, which was super fun.  So, when I got the mini I was a little disappointed by the outcome.  The body is great and the clothes in the rendering lack enough detail that they are not bad, but the face is no where near what I was expecting. The eyes just aren’t as defined as I like. Now, don’t get me wrong, I completely understand the limitations of 3D printing and that it will probably never have the same level of detail as a sculpted and molded metal mini but the picture made me hope for more.  There are spots where the print layers are quite obvious, like the back and boots and there’s a pretty rough texture in general.  Also, they seem a bit brittle, so I’m fully expecting to have to repair the blade at some point or just use her as a display figure.

primed back, here you can see the layering of the 3D printing the most, this probably could be sanded out with a lot of work or just pretend it’s texturing

Stay tuned for the painted version.
